Adsense Blogging Makeover – Complimentary Interview

by Ryan M. Healy on February 15, 2010

Ever wanted to monetize your blog with Adsense? Then you’ll definitely want to grab the free Adsense blogging interview I’ve linked to at the bottom of this post.

I’ve tested Adsense a few times throughout the years with a modicum of success. But lately my interest has been rekindled because of some new plugins that make it super easy to put Adsense on WordPress blogs.

(This is in contrast to the old days when I had to cut and paste the Adsense code on every page of my site. Ugh!)

A couple weeks ago, Mark Allen stumbled on my blog and called me up to talk. During our second conversation, he offered to do an Adsense makeover on my blog.

Since I’ve been wanting to switch things up on my blog anyway, and my previous experiments with Adsense on RyanHealy.com have generated very little income, I agreed to the interview.

At the very least, I figured it would be a good challenge for Mark. :-)

Turns out, Mark’s advice is really good. And while the jury is still out on whether Adsense will work on this blog or not, Mark’s advice is already producing good results on another blog I write.

With that in mind, here’s the link to go download the Adsense makeover interview from Mark’s blog. I hope you get as much out of the interview as I did. Enjoy!

I appreciate the kudos on the advice and interview we did, Ryan.

About the lack of AdSense success on this blog — I think there's a few factors to consider:

1) Link leak
You have dozens and dozens of links that leak your visitors away from your payoff. In order for this to work effectively, you need to have few (if any) links carrying your visitors away from your blog posts.

Plus you might tweak that slide up at the bottom… not only is that another leak, but it comes up every time I visit your blog. Can you have it show just once?

2) Social media
The “gurus” tell us social media is great… and it is — when done the right way. But when you have social media link directly to your blog post, it dilutes response a lot. In fact insiders consider social media (especially StumbleUpon) as “junk traffic.” I would tend to agree. It's VERY difficult to monetize social media traffic. And the proof is in the numbers — enter anything to do with social media into Google's Keyword Tool and you'll hardly see any bids above 5 cents.

So, you should analyze your traffic and see if you're getting a lot of social media eyeballs. If so, it's going to dilute your response.

3) Sophisticated visitors
As we discussed in the audio, you might be attracting sophisticated visitors… and they're half as likely to click on AdSense than “less-sophisticated” visitors. So when crafting your blog post headlines, create them to attract more beginners.

4) Relevancy
As we discussed in our audio, having the right blog post title is crucial — it lets Google's AdSense crawlers and bots find a better fit between the theme of your blog post and their advertisers looking to get clicks based on their keyword trigger list.

If your blog title doesn't include popular keyword phrases, you're going to get irrelevant ads.

I just finished one of the best posts I've ever written on the topic here:
http://www.marketing-ideas.org/Blog-Post-Title.php

Over time, crafting better blog posts titles is going to attract more relevant ads.

I suspect your other blog is doing well because it's based on a tight theme… were this blog is more general. Plus, your other blog has MUCH higher payouts.

5) Smart Pricing
Google admits they have a Smart Pricing (penalty) to weed out Made for AdSense blogs. You escape this penalty by getting higher clickthru rates and time. I know, I know — the chicken and egg problem. Just stick with it… one day your earnings will increase out of the blue. It did for me after about 7 weeks and it's been really profitable.

By the way — one extra tip I didn't discuss… adding Google AdSense to your blog actually bumps your search engine ranking a bit. It doesn't work 100% of the time, but when it does, you're going to notice up to 35% extra traffic.

Great suggestions, Mark. I've already implemented most of them.

It was time to simplify my blog anyway — had been on my list of things to do for a while. This gave me a good excuse to get it done.

Interesting interview… although I don't do AdSense I am curious to know if the suggestions work out for you.
