Last week, I started having problems with my WiFi router. It started blocking my client’s sites — and only his sites.
It was selective filtering. Really weird.
So I began investigating to try to figure out the problem. Spent hours testing my laptop and my wife’s laptop, plugging into the cable modem vs. using the router, etc.
When I couldn’t figure out the problem, I ended up sitting on a pillow with my back against a wall plugged directly into the router. I spent a few days like that, suffering numbness in various body parts from the awkward sitting position.
Some business tools — like a WiFi router to connect to the Internet — are priceless. And we take them for granted until something goes wrong.
Finally, I took a trip down to Best Buy last night and purchased a new Linksys router. Plugged it in and it worked like a charm.
Man, I’ve never felt so relieved that it worked!
After experiencing so much pain and frustration last week, I’m thrilled. It’s the power of contrast.
When it comes to the tools that keep your business running, don’t skimp on quality. And be quick to replace broken tools — instead of drawing out the process like I did.
I wish I had buckled down and bought the new router last week…

Hey Ryan,
What’s the most vital tool you have in your arsenal?
For me it’s my body. When I read that comment about certain parts of your body going numb while sitting in that awkward position I couldn’t help but think that the majority of people feel pain even when they sit normally.
Actually most people don’t sit “normally”. Especially those who sit in front of a computer all day.
Their shoulders hunch forward and the get pain in their neck, shoulders and probably their hips because of their bad posture.
Years ago Tony Robbins turned me on to a man named Pete Egoscue. He’s an expert on the structural alignment of our bodies.
Tony sought him out to help him and his followers at the Mastery retreat.
When our bodies are racked with pain it’s pretty hard to feel jazzed. Especially if this pain keeps us from exercising.
Before I’d heard about Pete, I had hurt my knee running. I went to a sports doctor and he told me I had patelar tendonitis (probably spelled wrong).
This was the voodoo curse I needed so I could adopt a sweet excuse not to exercise. “I’ve got patelar tendonitis. Doc said so.”
My lower self loved it but the part of who wanted to be great dreaded the idea of being weakened.
Shortly after my sentence to lazydom, I heard Tony talk about Pete and went and picked up his book “Pain Free”.
In it Pete talks about how your muscles and bones work as a single unit and when something is out of alignment it spirals throughout your body and causes aches and pains.
The method is what he calls a menu of stretches and movements that re-awaken muscles that are being neglected which in turn re-align your body.
In the book he has a section on feet, knees, hips, back, shoulders, neck and hands. In each section he talks about why pain would show up in these areas and then he has a menu of movements to follow to rid pain from them.
I went to the knee section and went through the movements every day for about 20 minutes and in less than 19 days my knee didn’t hurt anymore.
This was several years ago and the pain has never come back. I’ve even gone through pretty long stretches where I didn’t follow his maintainance routine and it still didn’t come back.
When I started a vigorous fitness routine I started doing this maintenance routine before every workout to warm my body up for the sprints and explosive jumping exercises I’d be doing.
I haven’t missed a workout yet due to any muscle or joint pain. I love it.
One of tests Tony gives people to do to feel for themselves how out of whack they are at his seminars is to have people stand up, shake their body out and then close their eyes.
Try it.
If you start feeling like you’re gonna fall over, you need help. Our eyes help keep us balanced. But guess what?
If your body is in alignment you don’t need your eyes to keep you from nose diving into furniture. Your muscles work as a unit to keep you upright.
Eben Pagan has helped remind me that “I” am what makes my business work. If I don’t take of the vessel that houses me then how I can I ever expect it to yield awesome results for me when I push it to the max?
Google Pete Egoscue, buy his book or videos. You’ll discover a hidden business you can use to enhance your life.

Ryan,
Did you change:
* The default password?
* The SSID of your wireless network name (and set it to not broadcast)?
* Choose WPA (at a minimum) and not WEP?
* Choose a long passphrase?
If not, you’re not done yet… :) (But knowing you, I’m sure you’ve already done all this)
Take care,
Tom
Wow…I can’t top that “comment”, Ryan.
Still…I can put a pitch in for Linksys. I’ve used that brand exclusively, and it has never sold me up the river. And I’ve moved my router and cabling around between two different spots at least a half dozen times.
My system isn’t WiFi because I keep things easily connectable in 3 rooms. And I have 3 computers I network together so I can share files. It’s much faster with cables.
So…I’m glad you’re back online and hopefully “in line”.
Tony
@Note Taking Nerd – Wow! I think you wrote 4 times what I did in my original post. :-) I agree: It’s important we take care of our body — it is the most important “tool” we have!
@Tom – Those are good questions. I pretty much went through everything. Talked with Comcast cable, my brother (who is an IT guy), etc. After a certain point, spending $60 on a new router was a better way to spend my time.
@Tony – Yes, I’m back online… and (ironically) getting more done today as a result. Feels good.
Hey Ryan,
I had the same problem only with my Macbook on a Netgear wifi router. My Linksys died. I had the Netgear setup as a switch so I reconfigured it to be the main router. It actually happened after an automatic software patch sent out by Apple. A large number of people had the same problem.
My problem was with any site that was running Google Analytics. The sites wouldn’t finish loading or took 5 to 10 minutes.
I could hook up an ethernet cable and it would work flawlessly. My Windows XP laptop would work fine wirelessly.
I finally broke down and bought an Apple Airport Extreme. Worked flawlessly with both Windows and Macs (we have both in our house – mostly Macs now).
It loads pages faster using WPA than I used to get using WEP with the Netgear or the Linksys.
It was incredibly frustrating while it was happening.
Glad to hear you’re up and running again.
