<p>Organic search engine marketing can be slow and tedious and it is certainly worth the effort. But if you want to maximize your internet marketing you must also embrace Pay Per Click.</p>
<p>Do you use Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, or Bing&#8217;s Pay Per Click program? I have driven traffic to websites with Google Adwords. I&#8217;ve increased &#8220;Page Likes&#8221; using Facebook Ads. No matter how you stack it, Pay Per Click or Pay Per Impressions is key for your business.</p>
<p>Unless you&#8217;ve been living under an Internet Marketing rock somewhere you&#8217;ve heard all the buzz about &#8220;Mobile.&#8221; You&#8217;re either confused or you&#8217;ve taken action on &#8220;Mobile Marketing.&#8221; The truth is there&#8217;s no in between. Because mobile is on the rise it only makes sense that Mobile Pay Per Click (MPPC) is on the same path. </p>
<p><span id="more-4250"></span>MPPC is about targeting only mobile devices for your key words and terms. If you log in to your Google Adwords account, you can see the option to target smartphones and devices. You&#8217;ll also note, in Google&#8217;s instructional video about MPPC, that they want you to send the searcher to your <a href="http://www.mobilemarketingcms.com" target="new">mobile website</a>. Duh!</p>
<h2>How to Get 9-Cent Clicks on Mobile</h2>
<p>There are a few ways to do MPPC, but let&#8217;s talk two of them&#8230; </p>
<p>You can buy clicks on the Mobile Web when people search your terms. You can also choose the option of Google&#8217;s Display network. The Display Network is made up of content providers and publishers who partner with Google and sell ads on their mobile sites. The Display network will match your ad&#8217;s keywords to the proper audience. </p>
<p>You can extend your Mobile Ads with location information and a &#8220;click to call option.&#8221; Just be aware the click to call function will add a few dollars to your investment.</p>
<p>The key take away here is to get started. It&#8217;s amazing how the CPC (cost per click) is so much less for mobile-only campaigns. <u>One of my campaigns is getting clicks for as little as 9 cents</u>. That&#8217;s insane! A client of mine is getting clicks for 33 cents compared to over $3 for the &#8220;traditional&#8221; campaign targeting the same keywords.</p>
<h2>How to Get Started</h2>
<p>Log-in or create a Google Adwords account. Start a new campaign and choose &#8220;Mobile Devices.&#8221; Then, be sure you have a &#8220;Mobile Landing Page&#8221; ready to scoop up the traffic.</p>
<p>Your Mobile Landing page should contain all of the best practices of a traditional landing page. Make sure the page is relevant to the keywords and the ad. Offer some good information and be sure to end with a call to action so those clicks turn into leads for you.</p>
<p>Do this now. My prediction is getting clicks for 10 cents on the dollar will not last forever.</p>
<h2>Who Should Be Doing Mobile Marketing?</h2>
<p>Finally&#8230; A question that may be stewing in your mind. &#8220;Mike, who should be using Mobile Pay Per Click?&#8221; Good question. I must admit it was Ryan Healy who asked. So here&#8217;s my take&#8230;</p>
<p>If your business is local in nature, mobile pay per click is a must. For those of us with non-local businesses like consulting, copywriting or information marketing, it&#8217;s just a matter of whether you like getting ahead or not. The thing is most businesses can use mobile pay per click. If you use Google Adwords or have ever attempted to use Google Adwords, you should dive into mobile pay per click.</p>
<p>It really is no different. You just make some tweaks and adhere to <a href="http://mobilemarketingtips.tv" target="new">mobile marketing</a> best practices. Once again: Be sure your landing page is mobile and keep in mind your lead capture box will be at the bottom rather than on the top right. Be confident that most of what you already know about marketing applies to mobile marketing.</p>

<p>But if your account is still active&#8230; and you&#8217;re still using AdWords&#8230; then it makes sense to optimize your campaigns as much as you possibly can.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why I&#8217;d like to tell you about <a href="http://www.wordstream.com/google-adwords" target="_blank">WordStream&#8217;s free AdWords Grader</a>.</p>
<p><span id="more-3677"></span>A couple weeks ago, WordStream&#8217;s founder <a href="http://www.wordstream.com/larry-kim" target="_blank">Larry Kim</a> gave me a quick demo so I could see how the AdWords Grader works.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s actually really slick.</p>
<p>Simply fill out the brief form, punch in your Google credentials, and the AdWords Grader goes to work evaluating your campaigns based on 8 different criteria:</p>

<li>Quality Score</li>
<li>Click-Thru Rate (CTR)</li>
<li>Account Activity</li>
<li>Long-Tail Keyword Optimization</li>

</ul>
<p>When the grader is complete, you get a multi-page analysis of your AdWords account. You get to see how you stack up to other accounts that have already been graded. And you get suggestions for how you can immediately improve your results and profitability.</p>
<p>One of most helpful features of the report is how it scores your account relative to other advertisers.</p>
<p>Advertisers are pooled into groups according to how much they&#8217;re spending, number of keywords, and a few other factors. So if you&#8217;re running one campaign and spending $500 a month, you will <span style="text-decoration: underline;">not</span> be graded against a company running 100 campaigns and spending $100,000 a month.</p>
<p><em>You will only be graded against advertisers who are similar to you.</em></p>
<p>Your grade may reveal that you&#8217;re doing much better than similar AdWords advertisers. Or you may find out you&#8217;re doing a whole lot worse.</p>
<p>Either way, it&#8217;s helpful to know how you stack up to similar advertisers &#8212; and how you can improve your account&#8217;s performance.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>I&#8217;ve been suspended from Google AdWords since early September 2010. First, I got <a href="http://www.ryanhealy.com/google-mistake/" target="new">a vague warning in late August</a>. Less than a week later, I was suspended. Here&#8217;s proof:</p>

<p>I still don&#8217;t know exactly why I was suspended.</p>
<p>I know it had to do with something on this domain. From what I was able to figure out, my site was classified as a &#8220;make money&#8221; site, probably because I&#8217;m a freelance copywriter who helps clients make money.</p>
<p>In Google&#8217;s eyes, it&#8217;s apparently an &#8220;unforgivable sin&#8221; to talk about making money or help others to make money.</p>
<p><span id="more-3196"></span>I wasn&#8217;t using AdWords very much at the time I was suspended, and I hadn&#8217;t made any changes that would have a triggered a review. I can only assume my account was flagged in some sort of sweeping review.</p>
<h2>What Fueled the Growth of AdWords?</h2>
<p>I began using AdWords shortly after the program launched &#8212; back when GoTo/Overture was the biggest pay-per-click game in town.</p>
<p>Because the AdWords auction gave lower cost-per-click to better advertisers, savvy direct marketers quickly embraced AdWords. Google returned the love by adding better tracking tools for advertisers to measure conversions and ROI.</p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Direct marketers fueled the rapid growth of AdWords</span>. Big brands didn&#8217;t understand AdWords and were slow to embrace it.</p>
<p>Fast-forward to July 2011 and the landscape has changed dramatically. Big brands have finally jumped into the AdWords pool. Google has tweaked its ranking algorithm to favor big brands and similar &#8220;authority sites.&#8221;</p>
<p>Worst of all, Google has suspended the AdWords accounts of tens of thousands of direct marketers &#8212; without any kind of recourse.</p>
<p>They won&#8217;t tell you why they suspended you. And unless you happen to be especially lucky and/or persistent, you&#8217;ll NEVER be able to advertise on Google again.</p>
<h2>Google Snubs Big Spenders, Too</h2>
<p>If this seems unfair, that&#8217;s because it is.</p>
<p>I would gladly fix my site if Google were willing to tell me what I did wrong. Isn&#8217;t that how a business relationship works? Communication has to flow both ways. The merchant and customer need to work together for a fruitful relationship.</p>
<p>But Google doesn&#8217;t seem to want good business relationships.</p>
<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter whether you&#8217;re spending $500 a month or $30,000 a month &#8212; they&#8217;ll cut you off without notice if you so much as blink the wrong way.</p>
<p>I spent exactly $9,825.74 on AdWords before my account was suspended. A client of mine was spending $30,000 a month up until two weeks ago when he, too, was suspended without warning.</p>
<p><em>Who the hell snubs a customer who&#8217;s spending $30K a month and then won&#8217;t even give the customer the courtesy of an explanation?</em></p>
<p>If there was a problem, you&#8217;d expect a friendly phone call first. Or a polite request to change your web site to comply with Google&#8217;s advertising rules &#8212; and specific guidance about how to do it. Or <em>something</em>.</p>
<p>But Google has so much money &#8212; power &#8212; and control of the search market &#8212; they couldn&#8217;t care less. So they treat even their best customers like dirt.</p>
<p>Kiran Mehta, a Google AdWords Qualified Individual, had his AdWords account suspended in April 2011. In <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/groupItem?view=&#038;gid=37724&#038;type=member&#038;item=54757438&#038;commentID=40452716&#038;qid=46283b0c-12a5-466e-9b70-98d193e731d6&#038;goback=.gmp_37724" target="new">this LinkedIn discussion</a>, he expresses what many others have thought and felt:</p>
<blockquote><p>Google cannot give me an exact answer to what the problem is. They keep sending me back to links relating to their terms and condition, etc. It&#8217;s like going to see a doctor and he/she tells you that you are sick, gives you a book and says go and find what&#8217;s wrong with you and fix it.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Google: A House Divided Against Itself&#8230;</h2>
<p>True story&#8230; I wanted to run some PPC advertising this past spring. And I wanted to do it on AdWords. I hired a guy to do the work because I was too busy, and he tried to get my AdWords account reinstated.</p>
<p>He ended up talking to an AdWords consultant whose job is to bring new advertisers in the door and help them set up a successful campaign.</p>
<p>When the consultant saw the site we wanted to advertise, she was thrilled. &#8220;This is just the kind of site Google is looking for!&#8221; she exclaimed.</p>
<p>We nailed it. Navigation, all the proper disclaimers, an advertorial style landing page that wasn&#8217;t too pushy &#8212; all the right stuff. So she said she was going to push for us to be able to advertise.</p>
<p>There was a caveat&#8230; they would build out the initial campaign with our input. This was one of the conditions because she wanted to make sure we were successful.</p>
<p>Remember, this gal is on Google&#8217;s business development side &#8212; the side that offers $75 and $100 AdWords credits to bring in new advertisers. So she&#8217;s trying to bring in new accounts that go on to achieve long-term success with AdWords.</p>
<p>We were encouraged at first. We thought this gal would be able to help us. But things quickly went downhill.</p>
<p>Because while she said she was going to reinstate my account, she was unable to do it. Apparently, another Google team (let&#8217;s call them the &#8220;AdWords Nazis&#8221;) refused to allow us to advertise.</p>
<p>Worse still, she submitted some of the WORST keyword lists and ads I&#8217;ve ever seen. I couldn&#8217;t believe how untargeted the keywords were&#8230; and how terrible the ad copy was. This was their idea of giving us a &#8220;good start&#8221; and a better chance of success.</p>
<p>This was her final effort. She implied she might be able to reinstate my account if I agreed to use MY money to run THEIR campaign.</p>
<p>I politely said &#8220;no&#8221; and that I would no longer be using AdWords. And that&#8217;s when I realized&#8230;</p>
<h2>Google Has a Multiple Personality Disorder!</h2>
<p>My firsthand experience with Google&#8217;s AdWords Team caused me to realize just how dysfunctional they are.</p>
<p>They&#8217;re spending gobs of money trying to get new advertisers in the door&#8230; while at the same time permanently banning old advertisers for minor infractions and then refusing to divulge any specific information about the reasons for the suspension.</p>
<p>They&#8217;ve got one team trying to bring in new advertisers&#8230; and another team that has been given a &#8220;license to suspend.&#8221; The latter has the authority to override the former &#8212; causing all kinds of internal conflict and confusion.</p>
<p>I strongly suspect there are some individuals on this &#8220;AdWords Suspension Team&#8221; who are power-tripping. These individuals probably know zilch about running a business. I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if they&#8217;re former TSA or IRS agents hired exclusively for their lack of empathy for fellow human beings.</p>
<p>As John Jonas wrote in his 2008 post about his personal experience of <a href="http://www.jonasblog.com/2008/01/suspended-from-google-adwords.html" target="new">getting suspended from AdWords</a>: &#8220;The people who &#8216;run&#8217; AdWords are Nazis with no feeling for human beings. If you make a mistake, there is no warning system and no appeals process.&#8221;</p>
<p>And let&#8217;s not forget, the people they&#8217;ve put in charge of business development have probably NEVER spent their own money to advertise on AdWords, yet they&#8217;re the ones building out campaigns for new advertisers. (As I said, the campaign they built for me was the worst I&#8217;ve ever seen.)</p>
<h2>Is It Time to Boycott Google Search?</h2>
<p>It&#8217;s my personal opinion that Google has grown too big for its britches. It&#8217;s become a virtual monopoly and is now behaving like monopolies do: with complete disregard for the customers it allegedly serves. (Emphasis on &#8220;allegedly.&#8221;)</p>
<p>There are, of course, certain things I love about Google. For instance, Gmail and Google Docs are services I would be happy to pay for.</p>
<p>But the fact is, until a company like <a href="http://www.bing.com" target="new">Bing</a> or Facebook steals a big piece of Google&#8217;s market share, Google will continue to be unfair and impossible to work with.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s for this reason I&#8217;m no longer using Google as my primary search engine. I&#8217;m using Bing instead.</p>
<p>Furthermore, I&#8217;ve been advertising on Bing and promoting Bing as much as I can. I visit Bing daily to see the new picture of the day, then I click the &#8220;Like&#8221; button so it shows up on my Facebook page.</p>
<p>Over time, I hope this builds exposure, familiarity, and usage of Bing. And I hope it helps them steal more of Google&#8217;s share of the search market. Now, I realize I&#8217;m just one guy &#8212; but <em>maybe</em> I can make a difference. :-)</p>
<h2>Google Is Not the Only Game in Town!</h2>
<p>Thankfully, when it comes to pay-per-click advertising, Google is not the only game in town. Bing and Facebook are excellent alternatives. And while search volumes on Bing are far lower than Google&#8217;s, you can drive a TON of qualified traffic through Facebook &#8212; often more than you can get on Google, depending on your market.</p>
<p>With that in mind, here are a few options to explore&#8230;</p>
<ul>

<li><a href="http://www.facebook.com/advertising/">Facebook Ads</a>: Advertising on Facebook is fun because you get to combine images with ad copy. Advertising on Facebook lets you target groups of people by interests and demographics.</li>

<li><a href="http://www.amazonservices.com/content/product-ads-on-amazon.htm" target="new">Amazon Pay-Per-Click</a>: If you sell physical products, then you may want to advertise on Amazon. Right now, you can start advertising for as little as $0.10 a click.</li>

<li><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/ads/" target="new">LinkedIn Ads</a>: If you are in the B2B market, then consider advertising on LinkedIn. You may actually spend less to acquire sales and leads on LinkedIn given your ability to target exactly who you want to reach.</li>

<li><a href="http://www.business.com/info/advertise" target="new">Business.com PPC Ads</a>: Another avenue for PPC advertising in the B2B market is Business.com.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.infolinks.com/advertisers" target="new">Infolinks In-Text Advertising</a>: This company lets you place text links on a network of publishers&#8217; web sites. When a reader rolls over your link, an ad pops up. This medium is similar to Google&#8217;s Content Network &#8212; but you get more than just text to get readers to click.</li>
</ul>
<p>And I&#8217;ve only scratched the surface here. The more I investigate, the more I begin to see how many alternatives to AdWords are available.</p>
<p>Whether your AdWords account has been suspended or not&#8230; I strongly suggest you explore other advertising options and begin to divert a portion of your ad spend away from Google.</p>
<p>Because the way things are going at Google, it&#8217;s only a matter of time before <em>your</em> AdWords account <span style="text-decoration: underline;">is</span> &#8220;permanently suspended.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Always test your opt-in forms, your contact forms, your order forms, your upsells. Anything that captures prospect or customer information should be tested before making it &#8220;go live.&#8221;</p>
<p>And if for some reason you suddenly stop receiving opt-ins or orders, the very first thing you should do is check to see if your action sequences are still working properly.</p>
<p>One week, a client of mine called me. The PPC campaign and landing page I had designed for him were no longer working. In fact, he said, there had not been a single lead for an entire month!</p>
<p>Immediately, I realized this wasn&#8217;t a problem with the PPC campaign or the landing page. It was a problem with the action sequence.</p>
<p>With my client still on the phone (and speculating why the campaign wasn&#8217;t working), I quietly went to the landing page and entered my information in the form that offered a free consultation and hit submit.</p>
<p>Can you guess what the problem was?</p>
<ul>
<li>It wasn&#8217;t a broken form.</li>
<li>It wasn&#8217;t a bad script.</li>
<li>It wasn&#8217;t a missing piece of HTML.</li>
</ul>
<p>It was simply that my client had canceled his Aweber account and had never updated the form code.</p>
<p>Even worse, my client had hired a company to manage his Adwords campaign&#8230; and they had <u>NEVER</u> tested the action sequence!</p>
<p>Talk about a careless mistake. Not to mention, super expensive, too! This particular client is in a market that often costs $5 a click or more. It&#8217;s not difficult for him to spend thousands on clicks each month.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know how much he lost before he called me, but I&#8217;m sure it was significant.</p>
<p>The bottom line: Never pay for advertising or traffic until you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that all of your action sequences are working smoothly and properly.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>As <a href="http://www.ryanhealy.com/google-mistake/">Google Adwords becomes less viable</a> for your average direct response marketer, it only makes sense to look for alternative sources of targeted traffic.</p>
<p>After all, the more diversified your sources of traffic, the less any single source of traffic can negatively impact your business.</p>
<p>If 90% or more of your sales come from Google Adwords traffic&#8230; and a disgruntled employee decides to ban your ads from running&#8230; you&#8217;ve just lost 90% of your business in one fell swoop.</p>
<p>But if you&#8217;ve developed multiple sources of traffic &#8212; Adwords, Bing, Twitter, social media, organic search listings, backlinks, etc &#8212; then you won&#8217;t have so much to worry about if the Google gods suddenly cut you off.</p>
<p>Lately, I&#8217;ve been experimenting with a new Twitter tool that helps drive free targeted traffic to any page you want. Basically, the idea is to send personalized @replies to multiple users with a few clicks.</p>
<p>So far, my @replies are getting click-thru rates up to 60% and averaging around 30-40%. These are impressive statistics. It means that my @replies are extremely relevant. So relevant, in fact, that some people are even re-tweeting my @replies.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a real-world example from this morning&#8230;</p>
<p>Today I sent 35 personalized @replies using this new Twitter tool. Within an hour, 10 people had already clicked through. I can see this because I&#8217;m using bit.ly to track clicks. That&#8217;s a 28.5% click-thru rate so far. I&#8217;m sure this number will climb throughout the day.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a screen shot:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>I love Google. I really do. They&#8217;re true Internet pioneers.</p>
<p>But lately, I&#8217;m becoming a bit disillusioned with Google. They&#8217;re becoming more difficult to work with, more heavy-handed in their application of rules, less responsive to customer feedback.</p>
<p>Case in point:</p>
<p>Recently Google banned my ads promoting <a href="http://www.ryanhealy.com/copywriter">a long-form sales letter</a> on this blog that has a lead capture form at the bottom even though I have a full nav bar, legal disclaimers, and more than 250 articles on my site!</p>
<p>What really irritated me is that they had never sent me any prior warnings &#8212; and yet sent me an email that implied they had repeatedly warned me and I was unresponsive. Uh, no. The &#8220;final warning&#8221; was the first one I had received.</p>
<p>Here is the email they sent me.</p>
<p>Subject:</p>
<blockquote><p>Final Warning: Your Google AdWords account has multiple violations</p></blockquote>
<p>Body:</p>
<blockquote><p>Dear advertiser,</p>
<p>We are writing to let you know that your Google AdWords account is at risk of being suspended due to multiple violations related to our Advertising Policies, including the Landing Page and Site Quality Guidelines. Below is a list of example display URLs of the sites in violation of these policies. Please check the existing ads in your account to ensure that they comply with these policies. Please be aware that this is your final warning, and any additional violations of our Landing Page and Site Quality Guidelines will lead to immediate account suspension.</p>
<p>As part of our commitment to making the AdWords experience safe and effective for our users and our advertisers, we routinely review the landing pages that our advertisers promote through our search and content networks.  If we find that an advertiser has submitted poor quality landing pages that do not comply with our Advertising Policies, including the Landing Page and Site Quality Guidelines, we reserve the right to take account-level action.</p>
<p>Landing pages advertised via AdWords must have relevant, original content, and must be transparent about the nature of the business being promoted.  Further, advertisers are prohibited from promoting certain types of sites, which include, but are not limited to:</p>
<p> *  Data collection sites that imply delivery of free items, etc., in order to collect private information<br />
 *  Arbitrage sites without relevant and original content that are designed for the purpose of showing ads<br />
 *  Affiliate sites without relevant and original content that are designed to drive traffic to another site with a different domain<br />
 *  &#8220;Get-rich quick&#8221; sites that make unrealistic promises<br />
 *  Sites that are deceptive<br />
 *  Sites that distribute malware or spyware<br />
 *  Extremely misleading/unverifiable or inaccurate claims</p>
<p>Please note that this action is related to sites that have recently been advertised through your account. In a review of your account history, we found that your account had submitted multiple sites that merited poor landing page quality evaluations.  Advertisers that have a history of promoting poor quality landing pages are subject to account-level disabling.</p></blockquote>
<p>So: Based on Google&#8217;s advertising guidelines, I can only assume that my landing pages have been classified as &#8220;data collection sites.&#8221; Therefore, I can&#8217;t advertise on Google.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s the deal.</p>
<p>If I can&#8217;t capture some kind of information by offering something for free or selling something outright, then how in the world am I supposed to justify the advertising expense?</p>
<p>It seems Google is trying to permanently cement their position as &#8220;The One Who Rules the Internet&#8221; by favoring advertisers who run branding ads and &#8220;slapping&#8221; anybody who uses direct response techniques.</p>
<p>Is this a result of Google knowing too much&#8230; of their ability to see how well our sales pages are performing?</p>
<p>I can tell you one thing: They didn&#8217;t ban my ads and my site because I wasn&#8217;t generating leads. They banned it because I <em>was</em> generating leads.</p>
<p>My theory is that Google wants to make their advertisers totally dependent on them for traffic by prohibiting data collection. That way an advertiser will have to keep paying Google over and over and over again &#8212; and will never have an asset (e.g. an email list) they can use to create profits.</p>
<p>With that in mind, check out the discussion that has literally erupted over on Armand Morin&#8217;s blog. On Friday, September 3, he wrote an article called <a href="http://www.armandmorin.com/major-google-issue-affects/">Major Google Issue&#8230; Affects Us All</a>.</p>
<p>Apparently, Google is now banning advertisers who use what they call &#8220;bridge pages.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Example:</strong> Armand&#8217;s ad directs people to SecretPPC.com. He then has his shopping cart hosted on GeneratorSoftware.com. Because the cart is not hosted on the same domain as the sales page, Google is defining SecretPPC.com as a &#8220;bridge page&#8221; between Google and the shopping cart &#8212; and banning the ad.</p>
<p>As I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;d agree, this logic is ridiculous. Lots of online sellers host their carts on a separate domain to avoid paying for multiple SSL certificates.</p>
<p>Furthermore, does this mean every product seller who uses Clickbank to process payments can no longer advertise on Google? What about PayPal?</p>
<p>More importantly, <em>what about Google Checkout???</em></p>
<p>If Google is indeed banning &#8220;bridge pages,&#8221; then the implications will reverberate around the Internet for months, maybe years.</p>
<p>I can only speculate what Google&#8217;s motive is for all these heavy-handed rules.</p>
<p>But whatever it is, I believe Google&#8217;s brazenness will eventually backfire. They&#8217;re going to force advertisers to flee to a better medium.  And when that happens, maybe Google will finally wake up to how unfriendly they&#8217;re becoming to the very businesses that support them.</p>

<p>The problem is, the simple stuff don&#8217;t get no respect.</p>
<p>Furthermore, most business folks get distracted. They forget the fundamentals, choosing instead to chase fancy techniques that burn out after a few months.</p>
<p>Heck, I&#8217;ve done this myself. The fundamentals ain&#8217;t sexy, and all the fancy new techniques are quick to catch my eye. But I&#8217;ve found that over time the fundamentals are what&#8217;s consistently profitable.</p>
<p>With that in mind, let me share with you a simple 2-step process for filling your calendar with clients. Here it is:</p>
<h3>AdWords + Referrals = More Clients than You Can Handle</h3>
<p>I&#8217;ve been advertising on AdWords for more than 7 years now, first for a homeschooling company, then for my own copywriting business.</p>
<p>AdWords consistently produces new subscribers, customers, and clients at a profit.</p>
<p>Here is the process for getting new clients from Adwords:</p>
<ol>
<li>Set up an AdWords campaign.</li>
<li>Send people who click your ad to your lead capture page.</li>
<li>Convert clickers into leads by directing them to complete a form for a free consultation.</li>
<li>Convert leads into clients on the phone during the free consultation.</li>
</ol>
<p>That&#8217;s really all there is to it.</p>
<p>The second step is to generate referrals from your newfound clients.</p>
<p>How do you do this? Under-promise, over-deliver, &#8220;wow&#8221; your clients, and then (and only then) ask for referrals.</p>
<p>Again, a very simple process, yet one that most people either forget or ignore. How hard is it to ask a happy client, &#8220;Do you know of anybody else who might benefit from the kind of services I provide?&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Anybody can do this.</em></p>
<p>Of course, if you are just starting out, all your clients will come from advertising or marketing yourself in some way.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s how it was for me. In the beginning, every client I worked with had never heard of me before. I was an unknown variable.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s no longer true. Now, the single greatest source of new clients I have is through referrals. In fact, at different times I&#8217;ve paused my AdWords campaigns because I had no time to follow-up with new leads.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s the beauty of referrals. It&#8217;s a form of leverage that multiplies the effect of advertising on Adwords. Even if you only broke even on new clients from AdWords, you&#8217;d be awash in profits from referrals from those same people.</p>
<p>Is this 2-step process simple? Yes. Powerful? Yes. Profitable? Absolutely.</p>
<p>Now, if you&#8217;ve never advertised on AdWords before, then I highly recommend you get &#8220;edumucated&#8221; before you risk your hard-earned dollars in the Google machine. Everybody knows of somebody who lost thousands overnight because he or she didn&#8217;t know how to properly set up a campaign.</p>

<p>In July he made a quirky video of himself playing the guitar&#8230; and somehow got me to buy his copywriting course.</p>
<p>And today, I got sucked in AGAIN.</p>
<p>Basicallly, I got an email from Brad Callen about Keyword Elite 2.0. Looked interesting.</p>
<p>But I&#8217;ve been slammed with copy work this week, so I literally got up at 5:30 a.m. today just to watch the 8 demo videos in the sales letter.</p>
<p>I woke up, took my mouth guard out (yep, I grind my teeth at night), walked downstairs in the dark, turned on the coffee pot.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>When I first got started in Internet marketing, my first assignment was to learn how to use Google Adwords. This was way back in June 2002, soon after Adwords was first introduced.</p>
<p>At the time, there was no &#8220;definitive&#8221; source I could turn to. Everybody was just experimenting to see what worked and what didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Honestly, back then you didn&#8217;t have to be that good to turn a profit. There were very few competitors, and most folks didn&#8217;t know what they were doing anyway.</p>
<p><em>How times have changed!</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;ve personally noticed that even in the last couple years, the number of people bidding on major keywords has skyrocketed. It&#8217;s not uncommon to have 50+ different competitors all bidding on similar keywords.</p>
<h3>Which Is Why It&#8217;s So Important to Know What You&#8217;re Doing.</h3>
<p>If you <em>don&#8217;t</em> know what you&#8217;re doing, you could drop $1,000 or more at the blink of an eye&#8230; and literally have nothing to show for it.</p>
<p>If you <em>do</em> know what you&#8217;re doing, you can generate new leads and customers at profit. And you can do it over and over again for as long as you want.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a screen shot from my email inbox showing six new copywriting leads I&#8217;ve generated since December 10, 2008.</p>

<p>During this period of time, I&#8217;ve spent $79.05 in clicks. If I divide my total cost by number of leads, I get a cost per lead of $13.18.</p>
<p>Which isn&#8217;t bad considering that if even one of these leads hires me (and one has already said he will), I will make back my investment in clicks many times over.</p>
<p>My first real Adwords training came in the form of watching Perry Marshall present at The System Seminar in San Francisco, California. Of all the presentations I watched, I remembered (and applied) more from his presentation than anybody else&#8217;s.</p>
<p>(Although Gary Halbert&#8217;s was equally memorable&#8230; and much more colorful, as you might imagine.)</p>

I bought it about a year ago and have printed it, marked it up, and applied the strategies with good success.</p>
