Mark Shurtleff: A Case Study in Political Corruption

by Ryan M. Healy on February 17, 2011

Have you ever wondered how all those boiler rooms in Utah get away with so much fraudulent behavior without any apparent repercussions?

Answer: Mark Shurtleff, Utah’s Attorney General

Some of the largest call centers in Utah have given Mark sizable campaign contributions (i.e., “protection fees”) over the years.

For their contributions, they get carte blanche to defraud consumers out of millions of dollars.

To learn more about Mark Shurtleff and how he’s turned Utah into a safe haven for white collar crime, I encourage you to read this:

Mark Shurtleff: Attorney General of MLM (warning: strong language)

Ryan, love your stuff. Long time reader, first time commenter. Really surprised you’re driving traffic to saltydroid…seems like he could turn his hate machine on you or any of your readers (many of which would fall into his ‘scumbag’ category). Just wondering

Thank you, Adam. I wouldn’t necessarily characterize Salty Droid as a “hate machine,” but I know a lot of people see it that way. For the record, I’ve linked to SaltyDroid a number of times over the last 18 months. For instance:

There may be others I’m missing. In this particular case, SD asked for links to his Mark Shurtleff posts and I happily obliged because I believe this is a big issue: a public official is protecting businesses that are defrauding people of money.

I don’t agree with all of SD’s views, but I appreciate that he is exposing business practices that up until now have been hidden.

In particular, I greatly appreciate his persistence in covering the ongoing James Arthur Ray saga. The information he’s now digging up on Mark Shurtleff, attorney general of Utah, could be an even more important story.

I hope this helps to explain my thinking. And if you still have questions or concerns, I’m completely open to hearing them. Thanks.

Ryan,

Thanks. I have read most of your other post links to the droid and agree with exposing the boiler room coaching programs in Utah.

Maybe “hate machine” came across as a dig against the droid, but what I meant was that his posts contain strong vitriol toward those he deems as scammers. In particular, he seems to dislike anyone who uses persuasive sales copy with internet marketing or biz ops of any type. He uses a pretty broad sword swing approach.

There are a lot of legit internet marketers out there. There are a lot of legit biz ops out there. With free enterprise, we have to take the bad with the good. Think of the industrialists of the 1800′s. Bad and good. The net was a first world country and higher standards of living for everyone (almost).

I think it’s a shame when everybody is lumped together. Even though droid doesn’t explicit say it, I’ll be he could find a scam in buying a McDonald’s franchise or starting a software company. It just seems nonconstructive at times and incongruent with the spirit of your blog and teaching, which advocate pursuing opportunity. I think I found your blog via Michael Fortin (who I respect a ton) and it seems like saltydroid would have some serious issues with him and Morin.

Maybe droid is just a modern day muckraker, albeit with a more wide ranging and personal vendetta than Ida Tarbell or Upton Sinclair.

Anyway…appreciate your writing and blog. Keep up the great work.
