A New Trend in Business

Looks like retirement is becoming less about world travel, tropical cruises, and sipping piña coladas on the beach… and more about transitioning into a productive, purposeful life without the shackles of a job.

Which is to say, baby boomers are becoming entrepreneurs and starting their own businesses — even in their 80s. Gladys Edmunds writes:

Because our life expectancy has greatly increased and continues to rise, you will see more mature adults entering into their own businesses. According to the Census Bureau, by 2020 there will be more than 118 million people over 50. These are mostly baby boomers, and you can be sure we don’t plan to retire and sit back in our rocking chairs. Many folks in this group are already beginning new careers and launching new businesses.

For years, I’ve been thinking about how Baby Boomers will affect the economy as they get older.

First, it was downsizing from McMansions into smaller, lower-maintenance houses. This predictably caused the top end of the housing market to bust. There are simply not enough Gen-Xers to buy up all those big homes.

And now, as pensions go bankrupt and retirement savings become less dependable, Boomers are going into business for themselves.

Obviously, this trend will open up a whole new market: Helping Boomers to succeed in business.

This is why I registered two domains earlier this year: BOOMERBUSINESS.ORG and BOOMERBIZ.ORG

Whether I find time to actually do anything with these domains is another issue entirely.
